After four years and nearly 1,100 posts, the cute squirrel mascots at FreeDownloadADay.com are still bringing great free software and Web-based resource profiles to an Internet audience.
FreeDownloadADay.com lists sites and software on subjects ranging from money management to Web development tools to games. FreeDownloadADay's mission is: "One great program every day, whether you need it or not."
Since the first post on May 18, 2005, each weekday, a new site, piece of downloadable software or online service has been highlighted. Chippy and Cheapy have shared profiles of and links to: measurement converters, royalty-free sounds, file compressors, file transfer tools, and much, much more. All of the resources are categorized by platform (MacOS, Linux or Windows) as well as by type of program.
"Every single download, Web-based tool or software program is completely free," said Kevin Savetz, the site's creator. "We have shared well over 1,000 of these resources with FreeDownloadADay visitors and plan to continue with thousands more."
"The software and tools profiled are suitable for businesspeople, Webmasters, bloggers and the casual home user as well," he added. "We feature downloads that have stood the test as time as well as the 'best-kept secrets' of the Web."
As part of the anniversary celebration, squirrels Chippy and Cheapy are reminding site visitors that they can show they are fans the site, as well as help spread the word about the great free resource, by ordering a free laptop sticker. The sticker pictures the two squirrels and some nuts, signifying the opportunity to "squirrel away" free downloads. The sticker is printed on heavy-duty, glossy paper and can be applied to any laptop computer and later removed (and reused) without leaving a residue.
